It can be a viable source of income when the rigors of professional practice no longer align with your chosen lifestyle. The stress, professional indemnity risk, physical strain and energy of a professional’s career may no longer seem as attractive as it did when you were a younger professional. Becoming an expert witness can be a way to supplement (or even replace) your income as you transition away from your traditional practice.
Some may choose to become an expert witness to build their profile, share their technical expertise and contribute to the justice system.
Others may have just "fallen into it".
What your reason for becoming an expert witness, the role comes with great responsibility. Your evidence can change the course of a dispute. It can sometimes make or break a case.
It can also make or break your reputation. If you do well, a judge may publicly praise your work. If you do poorly, then you can be crucified in a judgment for all the world to see!
